3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sandra Little, social worker:
“I was really disappointed. I expected nonsense from Trump and he always delivers, but Biden, I was a little disappointed because I really wanted him to answer the questions and not to get caught up in the nonsense. And he got dragged in and it was very hard to know what his position is. So as a Democrat, I don't know what his position is in terms of, you know, making daycare affordable, you know, and what his position is on the African-American community.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Nathan Lenet, therapist:
“It was really hard to watch, like I wanted to turn it off almost immediately. But I somehow powered through. My wife was not as strong, she left the room because she couldn't take it. My reaction was just a lot of sadness. I think we have not good choices. I was hoping that Biden would do better than he did. I knew what to expect from Trump because he's been that way as long as he's been in politics. But I think it was hard to see Biden perform so poorly."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Trevor Borden, tech entrepreneur:
“I really didn't feel there was a need to watch the debate. At this point, you're not going to really sway anyone's mind. It's the, the race to the bottom all over again. Last night was the mummy versus the dummy. So, you know, for those who tuned in, it’s kind of was a waste of time as far as I'm concerned."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Amina Barhumi, affiliated with Muslim Civic Coalition:
“’I’m a Muslim, practicing Muslim and somebody who represents the American Muslim community. I would say that the pulse of the Muslim community has been, especially over the last around eight months, that we have two not so great options that are frontrunners on the ticket. Yesterday was an affirmation of exactly that. We're still waiting to hear from them on issues that matter to the Muslim community."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Amina Barhumi, affiliated with Muslim Civic Coalition:
"Last night was an indication of how far removed our elected officials and our candidates are from the general public. And so, if anything, that is what the debate yesterday underscored."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Amina Barhumi, affiliated with Muslim Civic Coalition:
"Yeah, I mean, I think it was hard to watch, quite frankly. I think it was very difficult to watch. I mean, I have teenagers and it felt like a bunch of bickering, and nonsensical, name calling. And I, I think the American public expects more, and I think it, you know, it's very demoralizing that we have to contend with the fact that these are the two frontrunner nominees.”

STORYLINE:
President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump held an unusually early debate on Thursday night in Atlanta, speaking to an electorate that has expressed strong dissatisfaction with their choice of candidates.
It was contentious from the start.
Trump projected confidence and certitude even when he was wrong on the facts. Biden at times was halting, and had some difficulty finishing off his thoughts.
Americans around the country shared their thoughts on the debate.
