'My Jewish Mother’s (Honorary Lebanese) Vegetarian Cookbook' is a three movement work written for Intertidal Choral Ensemble by Patrick Zhu, a singer in Intertidal's bass section. When asked to write music for a recipes themed concert, Patrick found text in a very special recipe book belonging to his friend and roommate Danny.
Danny says of the recipe book:
"The recipes you’ll find within these compositions are selections from the most heartfelt gift I’ve ever received, “My Jewish Mother’s (Honorary Lebanese) Vegetarian Cookbook”. My mom created it as a personalized cookbook for me (as I was my household’s resident picky vegetarian growing up), and it compiles all of my favourite, long-time secret recipes from across my mixed-culture family—and as you can imagine, we’re on VERY special permission to present these to the public. Patrick made sure I was present throughout his composition process to make sure each piece represented something beyond the recipe itself—how the food tasted fresh from my grandma’s oven, what emotions and associations they stir up within me. To say he’s done an excellent job is a “tasteless” understatement—hah .. hahah. Please enjoy a three-course Jewish-Lebanese meal for your ears."

Recorded on March 10, 2024 at Knox United Church in Vancouver, BC.
