Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator is a color vector arcade game created by Sega in 1982, inspired by the popular television and film series. The game places players in command of the U.S.S. Enterprise on a mission to defend Federation starbases and battle Klingon warships across increasingly hostile sectors of space.
The control system features a weighted spinner for navigation and buttons for impulse engines, warp drive, phasers, and photon torpedoes. Players must skillfully manage their shield energy, weapon supplies, and warp power—replenished only by docking with threatened starbases.
Before gameplay begins, the player is greeted by familiar voices from the series: Scotty proclaims, “You are the Captain of the Starship Enterprise,” followed by the iconic Star Trek theme and Mr. Spock’s calm welcome, “Welcome aboard, Captain.”
The game was available in several cabinet styles, including a sit-down model known as The Captain’s Chair—a large white enclosure with controls built into the armrests—as well as a dedicated upright version and a conversion kit for existing machines.
The game is finally complete.
