Through a series of demonstrations, participants in this Masters Workshop will learn a low tech, low cost, efficient method of making traditional Diffusion Bonded Mokume-Gane.

Each student will make a 15-17 layer billet using 20 gauge copper and Sterling silver sheet cut into 1 x 1 inch squares. The billet will be fired in a refractory brick mini furnace using soldering torches as the heat source. Students will learn how to make patterned sheet metal and fabricate a seamless hollow Mokume-Gane ring using the washer method. Enough material is leftover to make multiple rings or use in other jewelry projects.

ABOUT ERIC: Eric Burris constructs sculptural jewelry, influenced by nature, architecture, travel, and the materials themselves. He combines wood with Mokume Gane; they complement each other visually, but contrast in terms of natural vs. man-made. Currently he lives in Silver Spring, MD with his partner Gretchen and their dogs Lita and Sligo. Eric has a small but well-equipped studio where he is able to make his own raw materials. He participates in regional and national fine craft shows and festivals and has also been an educator for several years, teaching at the college level and conducting workshops on the Mokume Gane technique.
