Sonning Commons original name derived from the sonen or sunning, meaning the exposed land between the two branches of the River Thames. The area was a centre of Druidic activity and was probably a place of worship, as evidenced by the barrows (old Celtic burial mounds) still present on the common land. The area subsequently became an important center of medieval English woolen production, but has since evolved.

Sonning Common is quintessentially English. The village maintains a characterful Anglican church (St Peters, built in 1841); several traditional pubs, including the Ring of Bells, the Boot Inn and the Blue Mountain (all of which have characterful gardens); a library; and numerous chain stores such as Tesco and the Co-op. It also features a garden centre, a community centre, a chemist and post office, and several independent shops.

The centre of the village is overlooked by the Sonning Common town sign, cunningly spelling out the name of the village alongside a background of white daisies and a convincing representation of the summer sun.
