Many people know CPUs contain small but valuable amounts of gold on their pins and internal components, but few truly understand how nitric acid works in the recovery process.

Nitric acid does NOT dissolve gold.
Its real purpose is to dissolve the base metals underneath the gold plating—such as copper, nickel, silver, and zinc. Once these metals dissolve, the gold separates as thin foils, flakes, or dark gold powder. This step is known as stripping or parting.

To actually dissolve gold and refine it into high purity, a much stronger mixture is required: Aqua Regia (Nitric Acid + Hydrochloric Acid in a 1:3 ratio).
Aqua regia dissolves gold by oxidizing it and forming the stable complex tetrachloroaurate, after which gold can be precipitated using sodium metabisulfite.
