Authentic Korean cuisine? Check. Historic sites? Check. Modern shopping malls? Check and check. While Dongdaemun may not be the most authentic market in Korea, it certainly shows the coalescence of modernity and tradition. Sleek multi-story malls, like Doota and Migliore, loom above street vendors and throngs of people. Hawkers selling traditional goods compete with the likes of Louis Vuitton and Coco Chanel. Initially the dizzying array of shops, roughly 50,000 of them, is disorienting to say the least. However, after getting one's bearings, Dongdaemun's hidden treasures seem to suddenly reveal themselves.
Dongdaemun is divided into two sections, aptly named Section 1 and Section 2. While both are retail oriented, Section 1 is geared more towards individuals whereas Section 2 is more wholesale-centric. With that said, both are equally worth exploring.
After spending time in Doota and Migliore, the two largest malls located in Section 1, head over to Hello apM. While it is worth noting that the mall itself is not too noticeably different from its competitors, it is one of the few large malls in Dongdaemun that is open on Mondays. Another alternative is Good Morning City which is noted for its vast collection of hanbok retailers. Each of these malls are open from 10:30am to roughly 4:30am, where Hello apM closes at 5am.
Wander over to Section 2 for more action. Here, buildings like Miglore Valley are crammed with smaller retailers. While it is more wholesale oriented, you can still find great deals on clothes, shoes, and accessories. Like most markets in Korea, haggling is the norm.
If shopping does not quite fit your style, don't fret, there is plenty more to do in Dongdaemun. Head over towards the Cheonggyecheon for a respite from the city. Live music and meandering walking paths form a little oasis in the heart of the main market area. For architecture and histroy buffs, check out Dongdaemun gate. The gate was first built in the 1300s and served as one of the main entrances into Seoul. For more history, go over to the Dongdaemun Culture Park. Located on an excavation site of a Joseon era military camp, the park is home to a museum that houses relics found at the site.
To reach Dongdaemun market, take either line 1 or line 4 to Dondeamun station. You can also take line 4 or line 2 to Dongdaemun History and Culture Park. To reach the Cheonggycheon, take line 4 or line 2 to Dongdaemun History and Culture Park and proceed to exit 14.
