Vorsetzer is a German word meaning "to sit in front of". The word perfectly describes this type of piano-playing device which sits in front of a regular hand played piano and plays it using wooden fingers that strike the keys. Inside the cabinet is elaborate 1920's pneumatic technology that not only plays the notes, but has the ability to add dynamics to the music to give a very convincing human-sounding performance.

This machine was built in New York in the mid 1920's and is referred to as "The Original Welte" not to be confused with the Welte Licensee. (both play the same music rolls) By the 1920's, vorsetzers were considered old fashioned and space-consuming so very few of this model were ever sold and they are a rare sight today.
