Introducing the Chemical Use for Export Toolkit, a collaborative effort between three leading horticultural industry bodies - Cherry Growers Australia (CGA), Australian Table Grape Association (ATGA), and Summerfruit Australia Limited (SAL). Supported and funded by Agriculture Victoria through the Food to Market grant program, this initiative aims to equip horticultural businesses with evidence-based, practical guidance for exporting their produce.

A major challenge identified was navigating compliance with Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) in international markets. Growers, agronomists, advisors, and local chemical retailers faced difficulties accessing reliable information to meet these requirements.

In response, the project developed a suite of MRL apps, such as AusCherrySure (https://app.auscherrysure.com.au/#/), which not only provides MRL information for various export markets but also offers Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPDM) advice. It highlights disparities between destination market MRLs and Australian standards, helping users make informed decisions.

However, meeting export MRLs often entails more than knowing the limit. To address this, the project explored establishing Extended Withholding Periods (XWHP) using the OECD MRL calculator. This tool, coupled with MRL testing, shows promise in assisting compliance with export market requirements.

Additionally, the project focused on enhancing IPDM by improving the management of beneficial insects. Crop-specific posters and information on indigenous vegetation options have been developed to support this effort.

These strategic approaches not only aid in managing chemical resistance but also contribute to the long-term sustainability of our industry.
