The Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation has gone to the Max Planck Society.

The award honours those for outstanding work with another or others in the fields of public health, universal education, environmental protection and social and economic development.


The jury chairperson Gustavo Suarez Pertierra, made the announcement.:

"The jury praised the European vocation of the society and the interdisciplinary approach and close cooperation between research centres and universities across the globe."

The Max Planck Society is Germany's most successful research organisation with no less than 17 Nobel laureates coming from within its ranks since its formation in 1948.


The society publishes around 15,000 research papers in internationally renowned scientific publications per year.

There are currently 82 Max Planck Institutes, which conduct basic research in the service of human kind in natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences and humanities.
