A reading by Singaporean poet Koh Buck Song of his poem "Island", published in his first collection of verse "A Brief History Of Toa Payoh And Other Poems" (Imperial, 1992), and alongside translations into Malay, Tamil and Chinese in "Rhythms: A Singaporean Millennial Anthology Of Poetry", a book of 101 Singapore poems all translated three times into the other three official languages (Chief Editors: Kirpal Singh & Wong Yoon Wah, National Arts Council, 2000).
About the poet:
Koh Buck Song (family name: Koh) is the National Gallery Singapore's poet-in-residence 2021-22. He is the author and editor of more than 30 books, including six books of poetry and haiga art. Three are verse collections: A Brief History Of Toa Payoh And Other Poems (1992), The Worth Of Wonder (2001) and The Ocean Of Ambition (2003). The other three are: Twenty-five Years Of Watercolour Painting In Singapore (1994, with 12 poems as companion pieces to paintings), Heartlands: Home And Nation In The Art Of Ong Kim Seng (2008, with nine poems inspired by Ong’s art) and Around The World In 68 Days: Observations Of Life From A Journey Across 13 Countries (2021, with 13 haiga artworks of haiku with ink sketches).
The anthologies he has edited include Singapore: Places, Poems, Paintings (1993) and From Boys To Men: A Literary Anthology Of National Service In Singapore (2002, co-edited with Umej Bhatia). Inspired by his visit to Japan in 2015 on a Japan Foundation invitation as a cultural leader of Singapore, he started work on modernising the art form haiga, which dates back to 16th-century Japan. He has since held several exhibitions, including at the Esplanade’s Super Japan Festival in 2016, and an ASEAN 50th anniversary event in Vientiane, Laos, in 2017.
He was poet-in-residence at the Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh in 1992 under the Singapore-Scotland Cultural Cooperation Programme, and has also represented Singapore at literary events in Manila, at Cambridge University (UK), and Harvard and MIT (USA). In the 1990s, he was literary editor and columnist at The Straits Times, and English Editor and General Editor of the literary journal Singa. He read English at Cambridge and has a master’s in public administration from Harvard Kennedy School. The author of the book Brand Singapore: Nation Branding In A World Disrupted By Covid-19 (2021, third edition), he is also a country brand adviser, and has spoken on brand Singapore including in the UK, USA, Japan, China, Bhutan, Australia and Tahiti.
