This video lecture is about the Floating Point Addition and Subtraction.

Arithmetic operations on floating point numbers consist of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The operations are done with algorithms similar to those used on sign magnitude integers.

Floating-point addition and subtraction requires first an alignment of the radix point since the exponents parts must be made equal. Floating-point multiplication and division do not require an alignment of mantissas:
1) Product can be formed by multiplying two mantissas and adding the exponent
2) Division is accomplished by dividing the mantissas and subtracting the exponents

Registers for Floating Point Arithmetic Operations have been discussed in detail. The algorithm for Floating Point Addition and Subtraction can be divided into four steps:
1) Check for zeros
2) Align the mantissas
3) Add or subtract the mantissas
4) Normalize the result
Concept of overflow and underflow have also been explained with the help of example.
