Based upon the character created by J.P. Marquand, first entry in the fabulously fun Mr. Moto series of films from Fox., who decided that given the success of Charlie Chan, they would now try a Japanese detective. Mr. Moto ( Lorre )is after an international smuggling ring run by Nicolas Marloff ( Rumann ). On a freighter to Shanghai he befriends Bob Hitchings Jr. ( Beck ) son of the ship's owner. An agent of Marloff's, Gloria ( Field ), bewitches Bob on the trip, leading to further complications. Great disguises by Moto with good action and nice plot twists. An excellent start to a neat series of international mysteries.
