Style Study | Kamome Shirahama's Witch Hat Atelier - Landscapes

Howdys and Salutations y'all!!

Welcome back to art, folks! Today we're continuing our Style Studies series with the incredible works of Kamome Shirahama, author and artist of the wonderful Witch Hat Atelier.

Seriosly, the manga is gorgeous!! Go check it out!

We did a referenced drawing to study all the different pieces that make this art style tick, then tried applying it to a new image to see if we could mimic the effect.

We still need more practice, of course, but this was the process we defined if you want to try it yourself:

1) Identify main forms/silhouettes
2) Before adding hatching, think through all light and shadow sources
3) Add hatches that show form - rounded contours or inner corners.
4) Then any major details that will need to be shaded differently
6) Next do broad hatches and/or screen tones for general shadows
7) Finally, ad the texture hatches - any hatches that follow the textures and tiny details. These should be dense in high-shadow locations, and sparse in bright locations.
