A few more scoops and a new turbo engine for Ferrari's sharpest corner-slicer.
The Ferrari 458 is a quintessential supercar–the Speciale version that showed up at our Performance Car of the Year competition makes more horsepower per liter than any naturally-aspirated road car ever produced. But this is the turbo era, and the word is that Ferrari will stuff the twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 from the California T into the 458 for 2016. Our spies snapped a camouflaged version of just such a beast in testing, and while we can't see the engine, there are plenty of subtle details to spot. Ignore the mismatched wheels and let's take a look at what that camo might be hiding. The nose and sides both sport wrapping that might conceal new air ducts–check out how the door camo bulges out from the front edge of the door–though this prototype doesn't wear the small aero tweaks that set the Speciale apart from the "normal" Ferrari 458. Out back, this test mule runs the Speciale's unique exhaust and rear diffuser setup, crammed behind the non-Speciale's rear bumper. Whatever other secrets the 2016 holds, we can't see much. It may not feel like it, but the 458 has been around since 2009, meaning it's definitely in line for a refresh. Expect the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 to pump out significantly more power than it does in the California T–something around 660 horsepower would fit nicely with the model's image as a true driver's weapon, and would put the mighty 458 Speciale's 597 hp to shame. We just hope the new twin-turbo motor makes sounds as thrilling as the outgoing 4.5-liter naturally-aspirated V-8.
