This is my review of the fairly new Dapol Class 52 "Western" Diesel Hydraulic Locomotive numbered as D1038 and named as "Western Sovereign" in the BR Green livery with the small yellow end panels. The model and its box is all round top notch quality and this model comes in a solid box that protects the model locomotive exceptionally well whilst in storage or not in use. The model is DCC ready and sound ready as there is a provision for a bass reflex speaker to be installed by the user if they so desire this feature. Something like a 21-pin Loksound decoder is ideal and I will fit sound into this model at a later date. The model is loaded with detail as there is metal handrails and grab irons, etched wipers, cab lights, directional lighting as well as etched name and running number plates plus more detail parts including to further enhance this model train if so desired. However as advised in the instructions, some parts can only be added if the model is going to used for display purposes only. I shall be adding the etched nameplates and numbers to my model using a model friendly glue that won't attack the paintwork as this is a fantastic model from Dapol and I may add the cab steps as well later. All in all this model is a very smooth and an almost silent runner where the noise is coming more from the dynamos and the carriages under testing. In my view, the Dapol model supersedes all other model train makers that have done this model in the past. I would have no hesitations in buying another variant of this model locomotive from Dapol.
