Today India is celebrating its 72nd Republic Day. The concept of democracy is very much an Indic concept. India had a deep-rooted culture of democratic values. The concept of Democracy and the welfare state in Bharat finds its traces since the Vedic ages.

Sanskrit word “Ganatantra” is made of two words - Gana +Tantra. "Gana" means the group of people, Tantra can be referred to as a system of ruling. Cumulative this is can be described as the Ruling of People.

Some noteworthy facts:
1. The word Gantantra (Democracy) has been used 40 times in Rig Veda, 9 times in Atharva Veda.
2. "Sabha" and "Samiti" words are mentioned in both Rig Veda and Atharva Veda. People used to settle their ideological differences through debates and discussions here.
3. It describes Ganatantra (Democracy) mentioned as a process in which people took part in administrative decision-making at various levels.
4. The power of kings was not absolute. Public opinion was an important check on the authority of the king.
5. Important decisions were made after the discussion with the king, ministers, and scholars at that time.
6. The tradition of village Panchayat (village council) is an ancient practice in India.
8. Indra was the post that was known as Kings of King. The selection of Indra was also done through a democratic process during the Vedic period.
9. Atreya Brahmins, Panini’s Ashtadhyayi, inscriptions of Mahabharata, Ashoka pillars, Kautilya’s Arthsashtra, Acharya Chatursen Shashtri’s Vaishali ki Nagarvadhu, historical inscriptions throw light on democratic practices of the time.
10. Literary accounts of Buddhists, Jain scholars, Manusmriti, etc share evidence that proves the democratic system was well imbibed in Indic culture.

Dr. B R Ambedkar had once famously observed in Constituent Assembly, “There was a time when India was studded with republics and even where there were monarchies, they were either elected or limited. They were never absolute.”
