Rescue and recovery operations are still under way in KwaZulu-Natal and the near-term focus is on humanitarian assistance. Down the line the long journey of reconstruction will begin. Parts of highways never mind roads have collapsed and bridges that are crucial for people to go to work or school have been washed away. According to Premier Sihle Zikalala, the floods destroyed R5.6 billion worth of road infrastructure. President Cyril Ramaphosa has said that the significance of the Port of Durban and related infrastructure is crucial for the country's economy and it's one of the reasons a national state of disaster has been declared.
