China has warned Australia is going down a “dangerous road” following the historic AUKUS announcement.

Chinese officials have been lobbying the International Atomic Energy Agency to oppose the nuclear submarine deal, which Beijing says raises the risk of war.

“The three countries have gone further and further down a wrong and dangerous road for their own selfish political gains,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said.

“In complete disregard of the concerns of the international community.”

Commentators quoted in Chinese media were just as forthright, referring to the AUKUS agreement as an “expensive mistake”, a “time bomb for peace and stability” which turns Australia into a “US military base”.
