Cammino di San Benedetto: Hiking on roads and woodland trails. Day 13 - Collepardo to Casamari

The Cammino di San Benedetto (The way of St. Benedict) is a 300km hike in central Italy linking three of the most important places associated with Saint Benedict: it begins in Norcia where he was born; passes through Subiaco where he founded his first monastic house and the trail ends at the great abbey of Montecassino, where he wrote his rule, laying out the form that monasticism takes to this day.

It begins in Umbria, but soon crosses the border into Lazio, where it remains for the rest of the hike.

Day 13 of the Cammino di San Benedetto between Collepardo and Casamari was hot, humid and involved a lot of road walking.

The path undulated past the Certosa di Trisulti and then descended steeply to the bottom of a wooded river valley before ascending steeply and entering cool, beautiful woodlands.

Roads soon followed again, although fortunately they were not too busy. A break for lunch with local stray cats refreshed me for the the final few kilometres of road walking into Casamari, and the welcome sight of the abbey where I would be staying the night is a fantastic pilgrim room.

Despite the roads, it was still a fantastic day of hiking in Central Italy.
