sas nagar:the deadlock over jct electronics limited took a turn for the worse on wednesday with the company management deciding to shut down the plant. the decision led to protests by the employees, who were already agitated over the stopping of production.when employees of the 6 am shift went to mark their attendance in the factory, they were stopped by the security staff, who pointed towards the notice put up at the gate, declaring that the factory had been temporarily shut down in the wake of protests by employees. the police were present in strength to prevent the employees from entering the factory premises. as the news spread, more than 1,000 employees of the factory assembled at the gate and protested. the employees have even submitted their complaints to the local labour office and the punjab labour commissioner. we spent the entire day preparing papers to be submitted to the labour department.we will wait for the department response before taking any action, said jct electronics limited union general secretary mohan singh bains. bains said a delegation of employees had met the factory management last week to demand their salaries pending since june last year.the company management had last paid the salary for the month of may 2001 in december. the management has alleged in the notice that we had threatened them, due to which they had temporarily closed down the factory, he said. the lockout comes in the wake of a workers demonstration against the company management held on march 9. talking to the times of india, jct electronics limited general manager harsh thapar said, we have pasted a notice regarding closure of the factory.the copies of the notice have been given to the labour department and the government departments concerned. the workers had given us an ultimatum for march 13 to start operations and there was real danger to our lives and property, said thapar. the jct unit, manufacturing coloured picture tubes, had ceased operations on may 13, 2001, but the 1,400 workers employed in the two units had been pressing for resumption production activity. according to thapar, the unit had stopped its manufacturing activity in the face of accumulated losses of rs 160 crore incurred by the company.the management has put the blame on tough market conditions, with increasing competition from other players, for the unviability of the unit. our wage bill alone amounted to rs 147 lakh per month.we were in the process of restructuring the plant for resuming operations, but the employee demonstration has put the whole process in a limbo, thapar said. the workers had been demanding a voluntary retirement scheme (vrs), but the management had expressed its inability to do owing to the precarious financial position the company. jct has been facing a squeeze in profit margins for the last two years due to fall in demand and competition from abroad.
