Описание к видео The Day the Taliban Took Over Afghanistan | Channel 4 News Studio Debate (1996)

On 27 September 1996, Channel 4 News, anchored by Jon Snow, covered the extraordinary events unfolding in Afghanistan as the Taliban seized control of Kabul and consolidated power. This edition of the programme featured a studio debate on the implications of the Taliban’s sudden ascendancy for the Muslim world, international relations, and the future of Afghanistan.

Taking part in the discussion were Palestinian-born doctor, academic and author Dr Ghada Karmi and prominent Islamist cleric Omar Bakri Muhammad. Based in London at the time of broadcast, Omar Bakri Muhammad became best known as the founder and leader of the radical organisation al-Muhajiroun, which operated throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, advocating for the creation in Britain of an Islamic state governed by sharia law. Bakri’s rhetoric and activities made him one of the most controversial figures in British Islamic politics: he praised the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks, publicly supported armed jihad abroad, and condemned Western governments. In 2005, following the London bombings, he left Britain for Lebanon and was barred from returning. There he continued preaching, but was repeatedly arrested by Lebanese authorities for his alleged ties to extremist groups. In the years since, he has been widely described as a figure who radicalised many followers in Britain and beyond, with security services scrutinising his influence on later generations of militants.

This broadcast provides a snapshot of the moment when the Taliban entered global consciousness, and illustrates the range of reactions and anxieties the event provoked at the time — from concerns about Afghanistan’s future, women's rights under the Taliban, and broader debates about theocratic regimes in the Muslim world.
