One morning, Bill and Ben are working at the quarry as usual and they are getting bored of doing the same thing. Ben asks Bill if he can hear something different, to which Bill replies that he cannot. Ben then states that it is because everything sounds and looks the same and that they need a surprise. Bill is puzzled but before Ben can say more, the Quarry-master arrives with a message from Sir Topham Hatt and that they are to go to the harbor.

The twins hurry to the harbor, worried that they did something wrong and blame each other on the way. When they arrive, Sir Topham Hatt instructs them to shunt freight cars at the station while Edward is taking the children on a trip. Bill and Ben then meet Gordon who tells them to behave since they are on the main line now. Ben jokingly says the sight of Gordon made them think that the harbor was the scrapyard. Gordon is furious and orders the twins to make sure the Express is ready by tonight. The twins start shunting, stating that they know all about cars when they really do not. The cars claim that they want to help Bill and Ben to "organize" the harbor. The twins accept the offer, unaware that the cars are playing tricks on them. As a result, when evening falls, the yard has become a mess causing the twins to be late bringing Gordon's coaches to the station.

The next day, the twins are back in the quarry. Suddenly, they hear a deep rumbling sound and Bill's driver nervously claims he's heard a sound like it once before and it may be a rock slide happening. Then, the alarm is raised and the Quarry-master alerts everyone to evacuate as it is a rock slide commencing. Bill and Ben wait as the workmen hurriedly board their cars. As Bill leaves with his load, the Quarry-master, who has been left behind shouts for help. Ben waits until he is safely aboard his train, and the quarry yard is evacuated just in time as the devastation takes its course. Rocks fall everywhere and buildings are demolished. Seeing the damage shortly afterward, Bill and Ben hope that Sir Topham Hatt will understand that it was not their fault. The next day, Sir Topham Hatt arrives on board Edward and praises the twins as heroes for saving the workmen. Bill and Ben think that being called "heroes" is quite a nice surprise.
