(4 Oct 2021) The Kremlin on Monday has brushed off the Pandora Papers investigation published Sunday.
"The only thing that catches the eye (in the Pandora investigation) is a demonstration of which country is the world's largest offshore and tax lacuna— this, of course, is the United States," said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday.
Peskov added that the Kremlin hadn't seen anything special in the investigation and said what had been released so far are mostly "a set of groundless statements" that don't warrant an investigation.
Thomas Adshead, a Moscow-based financial expert, told The Associated Press that the investigation was unlikely to change the political landscape in Russia.
"This latest news will not change anyone's view in Russia as to whether Putin has large offshore assets or not. I think people who either believe that or don't believe that—there's no evidence that would change that view, one way or the other," he said.
"I think the reality is that firstly, it's quite possible that President Putin doesn't own anything in his own name anyway," he added.
The report shed light on how world leaders, powerful politicians, billionaires and others have used offshore accounts to shield assets collectively worth trillions of dollars over the past quarter-century.
The investigation, dubbed the Pandora Papers, was published late Sunday and involved 600 journalists from 150 media outlets in 117 countries.
Hundreds of politicians, celebrities, religious leaders and drug dealers have been hiding their investments in mansions, exclusive beachfront property, yachts and other assets, according to a review of nearly 12 million files obtained from 14 firms located around the world.
Much of the activity did not appear to be illegal.
The more than 330 current and former politicians identified as beneficiaries of the secret accounts include Jordan’s King Abdullah II, former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair, Czech Republic Prime Minister Andrej Babis, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, Ecuador's President Guillermo Lasso, and associates of both Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
