Dsquared review:

Dsquared2 is known for their denim. When you think formal wear, they don’t even really come to mind. This is a shame because Dsquared2 the past couple years has always had at least 1 really cool formal piece. This jacket was their flashy formal piece for fall/winter 15/16. To give you some idea of the cool stuff they do here is their current tux. I enjoy seeing formal jackets like these. Too often you go to look for a jacket only to have a choice between black, black, or more black. The whole point of wearing a tux is to be overly dressy and a bit ridiculous- you can’t get away with them anywhere else. If you’re getting a special piece, get something special. That’s not to say I don’t like my Dolce tux which is a little more plain, but this jacket is in its own category.

The main focus is the pattern. From far away you may think this is just a printed pattern, but you’d be wrong. The pattern is woven into the fabric. This means the jacket keeps all the fabric’s proproties such as sheen and texture. Another advantage is you get stronger colours. A red thread woven into the fabric will always be more vibrant than printing. A lot of effort was put into designing the jacket as well. When the jacket is buttoned the pattern continues seamlessly from one side to the other. This makes the jacket feel like one solid piece.

The material itself is…interesting. The colours are vibrant which means you need a material that will hold a lot of colour. Another challenge with a piece like this is the weight. To get that woven pattern, you will end up with a thicker material. This means you really need to go with a poly-blend fabric to get the desired effect. While the jacket is a poly blend, you have no idea. The fabric is so thick and stiff you won’t have ever worn anything like it to compare it to. You will not be able to move in this. On the other hand the rigid fabric will hold its shape better which allows the pattern to remain seamless.

The fit is a little boxy off the rack. Being a double breasted jacket, most are made a little wider to allow the average person to wrap the jacket over themselves. It is implied you are going to get a jacket like this tailored, and I did. The stiff fabric limits how much you can bring the sides and back in. but ultimately it looks good enough.

The construction is solid. The jacket is full canvas as far as I can tell. I like that they left the jacket partially unlined. I love to look in and see the backside of the material and how everything is woven. The green lining in the sleeves is ridiculous and goes well with the whole theme of the jacket. There are surgeons cuffs as you would expect, and all buttons are in satin which match the lapels.

Not a clue what pants, shoes, or shirt I am going to wear with this jacket (or even where I am going to wear it), but it’s so cool it’s worth just hanging onto.
