We’ve all heard about the many tales of ships that have disappeared at Sea in the Krakens and the Bermuda Triangle. Often, the ships reported to have disappeared in these destinations left no trace, and like others, they’ve never been recovered, which makes the story of the MV Joyita much more fascinating. Unlike many other ships that disappeared at sea, like the 1872 disappearance of Mary Celeste or the USS Cyclops’ disappearance in 1918, MV Joyita was recovered, but the crew and passengers of this small, somewhat ordinary merchant ship were never found. In this video, we will look at what really happened, where all these people went, and how the ship remained adrift.

MV Joyita’s Disappearance
The cargo transport ship MV Joyita left the Apia Harbor from Samoa to the Tokelau Islands on October 3, 1955. Aboard the ship were 25 people – a 16-person crew and 9 passengers. Among these passengers were a government official, a doctor, and two children.

Investigations
Investigations into the wreckage revealed leakages from the corroded pipes that resulted in flooding in the lower deck and the bilges. This was determined to be the main problem for the ship because one of the corroded pipes had last been replaced during the Second World War, and it had been leaking, so it allowed water to spill into the hull. Despite things being a long-running problem, the crew wouldn’t have discovered this leak in the open water.

Why Abandon the Ship?
With the dingy and the lifeboats missing, it’s possible that the passengers and crew left the ship. But researchers and experts note that the move wasn’t the most reasonable since the three lifeboats weren’t that seaworthy, especially when the ship’s condition is considered. Additionally, the vessel didn’t have enough lifejackets for all on board. These, along with the fact the vessel was perfectly buoyant 5 weeks after the wreckage, means that staying put would have been the most ideal thing to do.
