When performing the CKP test, the throttle valve must remain open at the end of the procedure. When that is done, the last part of the obtained efficiency graphs can be used to estimate dynamic (running) compression in the engine cylinders. Here is an example of a CKP test performed on a Toyota Corolla with a 1.6 1ZR FE engine. The owner’s complaint is increased fuel consumption and hard starting.
At the last stage of the measurement procedure a significant decrease of dynamic compression in two cylinders is shown to occur simultaneously. When the engine was torn down for repair, the head gasket between cylinder #3 and #4 was found to be blown.
Another example of a CKP test on a V-6 engine. The last part of the measurement procedure shows that the dynamic compression in cylinders 1, 3 and 5 (Bank 1) is lower than in cylinders 2, 4 and 6 (Bank 2). The problem is most evident at idle. The reason was incorrect cam timing for bank 1.
