From R2D2 and C3PO of Star Wars fame; to human-like machines that exist to serve their creators; to the Rover Sojourner, which explored the Martian landscape as part of the Mars Pathfinder mission, the word “Robot” is loaded with a variety of human imaginations in movies, books, and cartoons, etc. that indicate a probable future. As elderly populations rise rapidly around the globe, the development of robotics that could provide comprehensive and customized care for seniors becomes imperative to meet the challenges of ageing societies. In the upcoming nexFrontier webinar, we are delighted to have experts and professors from the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) Robotics and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) to share with us emerging robotics technologies and products that are customized for the elderly.

Firstly, Prof. Pierre Dillenbourg, Core PI of NCCR Robotics and full Professor in Learning Technologies at the School of Computer & Communication Sciences, EPFL will talk about robotic games for healthy ageing. Following that, Professor Guang-Zhong Yang, Dean of the Institute of Medical Robotics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, founding editor for Science Robotics, will discuss the role of robotics for the ageing society and how surgical, assistive and rehabilitation robots will be used in future years, and also outline some of the new research directions of the Institute of Medical Robotics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Then Prof. Robert Riener, Co-Director of NCCR Robotics, full Professor for Sensory-Motor Systems at the Department of Health Sciences and Technology, ETH Zurich will present new patient-cooperative and easy-to-use robotic devices that will improve the rehabilitation of arm movements and gait. Finally, Prof. Le Xie, Professor at National Digital Manufacturing Technology Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University will discuss the application of virtual reality technology in rehabilitation.
