Types of Statutory Survey based Survey Schedule: 
Initial survey: is a complete inspection of all the items relating to a particular certificate before a ship is put into service to ensure that the requirements are compiled for the intended purpose.
A periodic survey is an inspection of the items relating to the particular certificate to ensure that they are maintained in a satisfactory condition and fit for the service for which the ship is intended.
Renewal survey: is the same as a periodical survey which is carried out prior to the expiry date of the certificate and leads to the issue of a new certificate which is valid for a maximum 5 years.
Intermediate survey: is an inspection of specified items relevant to the particular certificate to ensure that they are in a satisfactory condition and fit for the service for which the ship is intended. This survey is carried out along with the 2nd or 3rd annual survey. The scope of the Intermediate survey is more than the normal annual survey.
The annual survey: is a general inspection of the items relating to the particular certificate to ensure that they have been maintained and remain satisfactory for the service for which the ship is intended. This survey is carried out every year plus or minus 3 months of the anniversary date. A docking Survey is an inspection of the underwater part of the ship and related items to ensure that they are in a satisfactory condition and fit for the service for which the ship is intended. As per SOLAS docking survey has to be carried out 2 times in 5 years and the period between two docking surveys should not exceed 36 months.
Anniversary date means the day and the month of each year which will correspond to the date of expiry of the relevant certificate. Annual or intermediate surveys/audits are carried out within plus or minus 3 months from the anniversary date. All the above statutory surveys are carried out by administration surveyors or surveyors of recognized organizations (RO)which are approved by the administration.
