What was Done “As in All the Churches”?
Most modern translations split verse 33 in half. The NKJV reads, “For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.” Grudem argues weakly that “in all the churches of the saints” should go with 1 Corinthians 14 34 instead of 14:33. Many translations follow the Nestle-Aland in taking “not of confusion but of peace” and using it as the end of the sentence which began in verse 32. That way it says something about the spirits of the prophets being subject to the prophets [because] God is not the author of confusion but of peace. Then, verse 33b becomes the first part of the sentence in 1 Corinthians 14 34, saying something like “As in all the churches of the saints, let your women be silent in the churches for they are not permitted to speak.” This is the wrong way to handle these phrases and reflects the bias of the translators. Grudem and others who follow this thinking appear to want to effectively silence the intelligent contribution from women in all the churches.
First, it is poor style to say “as in all the churches, so in the churches.” This redundancy flags a warning that two sentences have collided. What kind of logic or sensibility would argue that since we do this in all the churches, we need to do this in all the churches? No, verse 33 is its own sentence which concludes the thought of how to judge prophecies and keep order in the church during the impulsive activities of tongues, interpretations, and prophecies coming from the Lord. He is still the God of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
Second, textual variants show that 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 was not connected to verse 33. Paul’s consistent use of phrases like “as in all the churches of the saints” comes after a topic he has discussed. He does not introduce a teaching this way, but he concludes it this way often.
Therefore, after addressing the issue of wisely managing tongues and prophecy, it makes sense for Paul to conclude in 1 Corinthians 14:33, “For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.”
