Khadga Shamsher was born on 16 February 1861 as the third of the seventeen sons of Commander in Chief of the Nepalese Army Dhir Shamsher Rana with his third wife Nanda Kumari Thapa, of whom he was the first son. Among the seventeen sons of Dhir Shamsher, he was junior only to the eldest Bir Shamsher and the illegitimate brother Dambar Shamsher, who called him Sano Maila.
