One of the earliest games I played when I got my first PC in 1994, SkyRoads is an arcade-style reactions/memory test in which players must guide their spacecraft along series of platforms, pads and tunnels suspended in the midst of deep space, attempting to reach the end of the course before either fuel or oxygen supplies run dry. It's an evolution of Bluemoon's earlier game Kosmonaut, released in 1990, itself inspired by the likes of Trailblazer and Cosmic Causeway, released in the late 1980s.

The retail release of SkyRoads contains a total of 30 levels split across 10 different planets, considerably more than the Shareware release, and you'll spend quite some time trying to master all of them. None of the levels are what I'd call easy, but the difficulty increases substantially beyond the first couple of planets, with the game introducing new platform types, more elaborate level layouts, as well as requiring more stringent timing when it comes to jumping between platforms. The game also has a tendency to sucker-punch the player by placing walls inside of tunnels, which you won't know are there until you slam into them. Although you generally won't make the same mistake again, it's a rather lame design choice, given how tough the game is to begin with.

SkyRoads isn't a triple-A mega game by any stretch of the imagination, but it captures the essence of what Shareware was truly about. Smaller developers could ship a slice of their game in a try-before-you-buy format, with the full release available via mail-order or BBS. It's one of the reasons why the PC gaming scene in the early 1990s was so exciting, and I suspect those of you watching may feel a pang of nostalgia for an era of gaming now forgotten.
