The South Korean and U.S. defense chiefs released a joint statement on their recently held 57th Security Consultative Meeting.
The two agreed that there had been significant progress in the OPCON transfer to South Korea, and to further accelerate this, they decided to come up with a roadmap to acquire essential capabilities.
The two countries will pursue verification of the second step of the process, out of three Full Operational Capability in 2026.
Seoul and Washington further agreed to expand cooperation in shipbuilding and MRO, or maintenance, repair and overhaul, broadening it to include U.S. combat vessels and aircraft, starting next year, though specific details have yet to be decided on.
