For the longest time, linguists had a hard time connecting Albanian to any language family. It had funny sounds, funny grammar, and the elusive language didn't share the same vocabulary as the other European languages in its immediate vicinity.

But before long, Albanian was deemed a language isolate within the Indo-European language family. That meant that it was distantly related to other Indo-European languages, but it occupied its own branch of the Indo-European language tree.
