Can Malaysians truly afford to retire? Despite an official retirement age of 60 and a life expectancy of 75.2 years, majority of Malaysians lack sufficient savings for post-retirement life. Official figures show that only 36% of active EPF members meet even basic savings targets, and a shocking 81% of contributors won't have enough to live above the poverty line, risking running out of savings 19 years before the inevitable. This issue is compounded by global trends of increasing retirement ages due to longer lifespans and declining birth rates, placing immense pressure on both individual savings and national pension funds.

This video thoroughly explores the reasons behind this crisis, beginning with the detrimental impact of four rounds of EPF early withdrawals during the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw 8.1 million Malaysians collectively withdrawing RM145 billion. It also highlights the disconnect between official inflation rates and the actual cost of living, particularly for essentials like food, which has far outpaced wage growth, leaving many with insufficient residual income for savings.

Furthermore, modern consumer spending behaviors, influenced by social media and "Buy Now Pay Later" schemes, contribute significantly to the inability to save for retirement. Ultimately, it offers actionable strategies - knowing your retirement financial target, increasing your income potential, and investing in assets - to empower individuals to take control of their retirement future, while also touching upon the broader societal challenges faced by Malaysian senior citizens.
