The poem:
I think you still got it
I think it’s still in there

You’ve got this memory of a memory of a memory of you that was unafraid. So full of bluster to go conquer worlds. Now the most you can muster is to get through the day.

But you got scared, and I got scared

We pile these blankets to hold in the warmth, but that comfort sits heavy, the floor looks too chilled. You’re tethered to the phone plugged into the wall–the only power it’s getting is from you–a trepidation machine, a motivation latrine.

But I think you still got it
I think it’s still in there

You tried once before, and you’ve heard yourself say, “If I had known how much work it was going to be I never would have started.” And now you know it. You know it like handcuffs, you know it like brakes.

Doubts hold the mic while you hold the speaker. Holes in the road and dust on your sneakers.

But I think you still got it
I think it’s still in there

—---

Walk through the door and let fear do its thing, put it in your pocket and step out in the rain. A travel companion with muffled complaints. Fear is the penny but you are the train.

Listen, it’s a necessary part of courage, and it sucks, you can’t eradicate fear, but you can move forward anyway. Perfection isn’t about to show up, you’ve got to just start.

So do something simple that reminds you of you, do something else that whispers your name, do something loud, see the impotent sneers, do something with others, the strength of their grip, do something more and you start to remember.

Maybe you still got it
Maybe it’s still in there

The you that you’ve found was there the whole time, just being so vast and so small.

So go, do your thing, you’re not at risk. Do it different this time, do it wiser this time, but do it, it’s time.

Lines on your face leading the way, your feet on the floor, the bed in the room, you’re down the hall, moving again.

Because I think you still got it
I think you’re still in there.
