The Kratky method is a non-circulating hydroponic technique that allows plants to grow in water enriched with nutrients. As the plant grows and absorbs water and nutrients, the water level decreases, creating an air gap. This gap provides oxygen to the plant roots, eliminating the need for an air pump. It’s a perfect solution for small-scale indoor gardening or anyone wanting to experiment with hydroponics without investing in a complicated setup.

Supplies You’ll Need

Here’s what you’ll need to build your Kratky hydroponic system:

2-gallon bin with a lid: A dark-colored bin works best to block out light and prevent algae growth.

Net pots: These will hold your plants. Choose net pots that fit snugly into the lid of your bin.

Hydroponic growing medium: Clay pebbles, rockwool cubes, or coco coir to support your plants in the net pots.

Hydroponic nutrient solution: Purchase a pre-mixed liquid nutrient for hydroponics, or make one at home using the ingredients below.

Seeds or seedlings: Choose plants well-suited for hydroponics, such as lettuce, basil, spinach, or kale.

Hole saw or drill: To cut holes in the lid of the bin for the net pots.


HOMEMADE NUTRIENTS:

Ingredients - Chamomile, nettle, comfrey, alfalfa, seaweed, banana peels, powdered eggshells, molasses, epsom salt.

In a jar, combine ingredients, add water and ferment for 1-2 weeks.

Note this nutrients produces a strong smell.


TIPS:

Fill the bin with water, leaving about 1–2 inches of space at the top.

Mix in your hydroponic nutrients according to the manufacturer’s
instructions. If using a homemade nutrient, the ratio is 1 tbsp per gallon of water.

Use the pH testing kit to check the solution’s pH level. Adjust it if necessary to stay within the ideal range of 5.5–6.5.
