A playthrough of Capcom's 1990 action-platformer for the NES, Code Name: Viper.

Code Name: Viper was a part of the long string of hits that Capcom bombarded gamers with in the late 80s/early 90s. Their output at the time was amazing. They were constantly putting out new titles, and the consistency and quality of their stuff was on par with Nintendo's. If you were going to buy a new game, you could confidently grab any box with the distinctive purple frame and be assured you were going to have fun. That's how I discovered several of my childhood favorites!

But with so many good games, they couldn't all share the spotlight, and Code Name: Viper was an excellent game that never quite elbowed its way to the front of the stage. A lot like Destiny of an Emperor. Or Yo! Noid. Or Gun.Smoke. Or Willow. You get the point. It's frickin' sweet.

You play as an undercover US agent, Kenny Smith - a macho action hero with an aversion to wearing pants - as he hops around South America, blowing everything up and saving hostages from a drug lord. It was more than over-the-top enough to get me excited as a kid, and I still find it a blast to play now.

In every stage, you skulk about, leaping between levels as you shoot criminals and fling open doors in search of the hostages and the POW who's carrying the bomb needed to blast open the exit. Doors also hide ammo caches, time refills, and crumbling human remains, and you can duck behind them to get out of the way of incoming fire.

Granted, it's a thinly veiled copy of Namco's Rolling Thunder, but it's a fun one, and hey, it's not like Capcom minded when other companies did the same with their work, right? (Put your hand down, Data East!) But since it was developed (in part) by Capcom themselves, you know that it's going to look and sound great. The character sprites are huge and well detailed, the soundtrack is predictably fantastic, and it's cool how they used square waves to mimic the sound of speech for the rescued prisoners.

Code Name: Viper isn't original, but it's well made and a lot of fun. If you like Rolling Thunder and Shinobi, you're sure to like this one, too.

But yeah, Kenny really ought to find some pants.
