[Synopsis]

This video is a review about the USB switch selector for 4 PCs sharing 3 USB devices. It shows you how you can connect 3 computers to share USB devices, and to connect 3 computers to a single HDMI monitor. This USB switch doesn't have a power connector port, and you don't need it. As long as 3 computers are connected via USB to each computer, it can power your switch. However, the computers that are connected must be connected to the power outlet. The power supplies have to be on, but the computers don't need to be turned on.

For my setup, I have two desktop tower computers which I use for work, and gaming. One has 32 GB of RAM, a Geforce GTX 970 4 GB video card with a I7-4790K processor, and the other has 16 GB of RAM, Geforce GTX 770 2 GB video card with a I7-4790 processor. The 3rd computer is a Raspberry Pi 4 2 GB single board computer, I use this to play retro games with Retropie, and browse the internet with Raspbian by changing out the microSD card.

For most people this maybe a novelty, but for me I have a KVM(Keyboard Video Monitor) setup on every desk that has a computer on it. On another desk, I have a I5-3570k based computer with 24 GB of RAM w Geforce GTX 1080 8 GB, and a Dell Precision T5500 with 36 GB of RAM w Geforce GTX 1060 6 GB. This one uses a DVI based KVM with a microphone and 3.5mm stereo port. On other desks, I use a VGA based KVM with microphone and 3.5mm stereo ports. I had been using KVMs since 2004, and I found it useful to have more than one computer sharing the same monitor, keyboard, and mouse. However, this setup allows me to use 3 computers sharing the same keyboard, mouse, monitor, and other USB devices.

Some people may say, you can just use remote desktop access to control a computer via network, but it isn't the same. Remote desktop access cannot always be used when you are using computers that are using different operating systems, and you cannot do tasks like high end gaming. You can access a Raspberry Pi single board computer with remote desktop, but that doesn't have a GUI(Graphical User Interface) it is all terminal based. In other words, you have to type in commands to use it. If you are using it as a server that is fine, but if you want to use it as a regular desktop to do things, like browse the internet, shop online, visit websites, stream videos, check email, do social media, etc it doesn't work.

The reason why I did this was, so I could use a single board computer like a Raspberry Pi 4 to do mundane tasks, like checking email, surfing the internet, and stream videos. The full tower computers generate a lot of heat, use a lot of electricity, and in summer time I can minimize the amount of heat by using a single board computer during the day time. When I am not working from home, and most of the time I spend on the computer doesn't require a powerful processor. I can save some money on electricity and keep myself cool in the hot summer months. Furthermore, this Covid-19 crisis has lead to me getting less work, because the economy has stagnated starting from March of 2020. For me, I am doing less work, and I spend more of my time reading stuff on the internet. This is why I invested time, and money in this simple project.

A Raspberry Pi 4 or a Odroid C4 single board computer may use anywhere from 3.4 watt to 4 watt. The less power that is consumed means the less heat is produced. If you can get what you want to get done with less energy then why not? Plus, this will pay for it self in a year or two. I live in California where the cost of electricity is 16.7 cents/watt hour. If I left my desktop computer that used 200 watt for 24 hours for 365 days, it would cost $292.58/year. If I left my desktop that consumed 300 watts for 24 hours for 365 days, it would cost me $438.88/year. If I left the Raspberry Pi 4 for 24 hours a day for 365 days in a year, it would cost me $4.97/year!!!!! By the end of the year, I saved $287.61 to $433.91 in a year! I didn't spend that much money on this project.
