Vibrato and tremolo are two completely different effects, even though they're often mistaken for one another. Some guitar players, and budding musicians use these two terms interchangeably, which is a mistake. In this guitar lesson, Gary will show you the differences between the two effects.

Tremolo is an effect that changes the volume of the guitar. Tremolo throws the volume up and down. Think of quickly turning a volume knob to maximum volume and back to down over and over again, at a very fast speed. Another way to think of tremolo is like when you switch on and off a light at high speed.

Vibrato is a guitar effect that changes the pitch of a note. For example, when you use vibrato, you throw the note up or down. It's kind of like when you bend a string up. When you bend a string up, you change the pitch, and the note becomes an entirely different note. Vibrato is like this but the pitch does not change as much as when you bend, and the effect happens repeatedly, in a pulsating manner.
