Spinach, cheese soufflé. Truman Capote. Jackie Kennedy. Joe Kennedy. Esquire Magazine. Restaurant La Côte Basque in New York. Monsieur Soulé

La Côte Basque, 1965 was actually published by Esquire in November 1975 as part of Capote's novella Answered Prayers. It sent shockwaves through Manhattan's elite, and subsequently got him ostracized from high society. The other two sections, Unspoiled Monsters and Kate McCloud were published a year later, though they did not generate the same scandal. Truman told Esquire's publishers that he had a fourth chapter which would reveal even more dirt on his onetime friends, and they gave him a large advance. He repeatedly stalled in turning the chapter over to publishers, and after his death, no trace of the manuscript was ever found???
