5. SOUNDBITE (English) Shaul Mofaz, Israeli defence minister:
"Well, since the election in the Palestinian Authority and the fact that Abu Mazen (populat name for Mahmoud Abbas) was elected, we see positive steps that Abu Mazen is taking in the last few days especially in the negotiations that took place between Abu Mazen and the Palestinian terror groups for a cease-fire and the fact that he deployed part of the Palestinian security groups in the northern part of Gaza and I hope that he will accomplish the deployment of more troops in the southern part of Gaza."

STORYLINE:

French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie held an afternoon meeting in Paris on Tuesday with her Israeli counterpart, Shaul Mofaz.

The talks ranged from Israeli-Palestinian relations to mutual concerns about Iraq, Iran and instability in Africa.

The two ministers also discussed business interests in terms of the sales of military arms.

Mofaz expressed optimism about recent steps made by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, commonly known as Abu Mazen, towards negotiating a cease-fire with Palestinian militants.

Mofaz said he was pleased that Abbas had deployed Palestinian security forces to northern Gaza, and said he hoped to see the deployment of those forces in the southern part of the territory.

The Israeli defence minister also told reporters he wanted to start a dialogue between Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, and was anxious to improve the economic situation in the Palestinian territories.
