Genre: Working On Camp Comedy. Do we know what performance genre we are working on or in? Depending on the genre, you can take the same fabulous character, technically executed and creatively unleashed, and it either works wonderfully or looks like it doesn't belong. Here's an example... say your character is a self-centered, narcissistic king or queen, and you perform it with incredible depth and honesty, and it fits wonderfully in a historical drama. Great! Congratulations to you; however, what if the body of work you are performing in is actually a campy comedy? Unintentionally, your portrayal has now become incorrect for the genre. So what exactly is a campy comedy? Campy humor is described as "something that is intentionally absurdly exaggerated, artificial, or over-the-top, often in a way that seems to lack taste but is found to be delightfully amusing or charmingly funny by audiences." Adjustments would now have to be made to your self-centered, narcissistic royalty character in order to fit the genre of the piece. However, if we begin our character work from the beginning with the appropriate genre in mind, we are already one step ahead of the crowd. In this YouTube short, I am describing to my cinematic mentor and teacher, John Swanbeck, one of many scenes I am working on from the TV mini-series, "Dead Boss."
