Two methods using a less expensive digital action gauge and a dedicated neck relief gauge. These days I almost exclusively use the digital neck relief gauge, but on long scale basses and some other odd scaled stringed instruments where the neck relief gauge isn't long enough, the digital action gauge and a capo can come in very handy for getting precise measurements.

Measuring relief with precise digital measurements is absolutely the way to go for the most repeatable results. Feeler gauges are slow, clunky, and inaccurate, whereas digital measurements are quick, painless, and precise.

I set up relief by feel and eye for many, many years before finally making the transition to digital measurements, and I'm happy I did. My work's progressed to a whole new level ever since.
