Lola Young was born in London in 2001 to a Jamaican-Chinese father and an English mother. As a child, her creative talents were nurtured by her bass-playing stepfather and her great aunt Julia Donaldson, author of the children's book The Gruffalo. At 15, she won the Open Mic UK singing competition and soon after caught the attention of the two men who had managed Amy Winehouse and Adele. She gained recognition from her performance on James Corden, and her second album This Wasn't Meant for You Anyway featured the platinum-certified #1 single "Messy", which also took TikTok by storm. Says Lola, "Messy is an ADHD anthem. It really showcases everything I felt during my last relationship, but also it is deeper than that, as it talks about how I feel about myself in general—being too messy one day and too clean another, struggling to find that balance in myself." I've gotten a bit sick of "Messy", so I went with her second single, "Conceited". For me, the slinky glissandoing melody and finger cymbals evoke Arctic Monkeys, Pharrell, and Ed Sheeran.
