16 hurt by Champs-Elysees nailbomb

Sixteen people were injured, three of them seriously, when a bomb
packed with nails and bolts exploded in a crowded tourist area of
Paris on Thursday (17/8). At least four children are among the
victims. The bomb was hidden in a rubbish bin on the
Champ-Elysees, close to the Arc de Triomphe. The area around the
famous landmark was packed with people at the time and surrounding
streets were immediately blocked off by about 100 police. The
blast sparked a fire and thick black smoke engulfed the immediate
area. The latest explosion comes three weeks after a similar
device killed seven people and injured 80 in an underground train
at Saint Michel in the Latin Quarter. Security has been stepped up
since then with rubbish bins in Metro stations being sealed, but
those above ground have remained open. No one has claimed
responsibility for either blast.
