How did English evolve from a provincial island language into the dominant language of global power? In this lecture, Prof Jiang Xueqin argues that the answer lies not in conquest alone, but in poetry. Through the genius of Shakespeare, English became elastic, image-rich, and philosophically layered—capable of holding contradiction, ambiguity, and psychological depth all at once. Language was not merely refined; it was expanded into a medium through which a civilization could project itself.

By examining Hamlet and the famous “To be or not to be” soliloquy, Prof Jiang shows how Shakespeare transformed English into a flexible instrument of thought. Multiple meanings coexist within a single passage—suicide, revenge, fate, free will, existence—forcing audiences to think rather than merely consume. In doing so, Shakespeare reshaped the collective imagination and helped turn English into what we might call a linguistic internet: a platform through which cultures meet, but always through the philosophical lens of Anglo-American skepticism, empiricism, and pragmatism.

This raises a deeper question. Did English conquer the world because of artistic brilliance, or because its flexibility made it the perfect vehicle for empire? And what happens to global culture when one language becomes the medium through which reality itself is interpreted? This lecture challenges us to rethink Shakespeare—not just as a playwright, but as an architect of modern consciousness.
