The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. The ball (femur head) fits into the socket (acetabulum) and both are covered with a smooth layer called cartilage. When conditions like osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, or fractures damage this joint, the cartilage wears out. This leads to bone-on-bone disease, severe pain, limping, and loss of mobility.
