Flying Armbar

Описание к видео Flying Armbar

Flying Armbar, performed as a defence against a hook punch (the most common attack in street fights). In this version of the flying armbar, Tori is coming in from the side. First the punch is blocked by punching on the arm, aiming for kyusho pressure points, which are widely available on the arm.

Here's a variation of this form:    • Flying Armbar (Flying Juji-Gatame)

Many variations are possible. In this version Tori is jumping in from the side and the right foot is first positioned on Uke's hip, which functions as a staircase to gain height and thus potential (gravitational) energy to perform the throw. Using this potential energy, Tori's body can make a circular movement. Because the angular momentum is conserved, Uke is forced to go down with Tori and land right into the armbar, the Ude-Hishigi-Juji-Gatame, or sometimes even more in kind of a Kanuki-Gatame.

In a previous video (this one:    • Flying Armbar (Tobi-Juji-Gatame)   ) Anton Zwijsen demonstrated a similar technique, but without putting a foot on the hip first. That version is faster, but one cannot gain the same height and it is therefore less spectacular to watch.

This flying armbar is performed as a defence against a hook punch, however, according to the "principle of plurality" (the principle in Jiu-Jitsu which says that one technique is applicable to a wide spectrum of attacks), one can apply this technique on different kinds of attacks. It is of course required to get close enough to your opponent, so one has to get through the defence line first.

Note that this technique can perfectly be performed without a Do-Gi (Kimono) or clothes to grab on to. Clearly, Tori grabs around uke's neck and arount uke's arm (that's why one can sometimes land in more of a Kanuki-Gatame). By using your arm as a "hook" around Uke's neck, one can also get more closely to Uke and thus have more control overall.

The fact that one can sometimes land in a Kanuki-Gatame is dangerous for Uke's arm. The rotational velocity can make it difficult to hold back the force on Uke's elbow joint, so be careful! Another dangerous aspect is the landing of Tori onto the Tatami. An experienced partner is required, so don't try this without your martial arts instructor or professional accompaniment.

This technique is seen in several martial arts disciplines: Jiu-Jitsu, Judo (however not actively trained by most judoka), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Hapkido and of course now and then we see it in an MMA or free fight match.

This footage was filmed by Marc Smeets from Ethos Films. The Uke (falling partner) in this video is third Dan Jiu-Jitsuka Angelo Postma. A special thanks goes to Robbert de Moor from "Sportcentrum Delta" sports center in Hulst for the use of this beautiful Dojo. Also thanks to Rick de Maaijer for the great assistance on set.
