Drama, commotion and confusion took over like heavy rain on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, after suspended senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan stormed the National Assembly in Abuja to resume her duties but was denied entry.
Heavily armed security agents, including uniformed police officers, were seen barricading the entrance to the National Assembly, stopping the Senator and her supporters, including popular activist Aisha Yesufu, from gaining entrance. This has sparked a massive reaction on social media, with many questioning the rule of law in Nigeria and whether Nigeria is now a lawless state.
Natasha’s continued suspension has also been described as a grave injustice to the people she represents. “Six months without representation is tyranny to the people of Kogi Central. A Senate with (only four women) is, at best, misogynistic in nature. No woman should be barred from that House!” an X user wrote.
On March 6, 2025, the senator representing the Kogi Central Senatorial District was suspended for six months for misconduct and flouting standing orders in the chamber. Earlier, Senator Natasha, who is the first female elected senator in Kogi State, filed a sexual harassment petition against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. The 45-year-old lawyer argued that recent issues with Akpabio, especially seat relocation, were because she refused his sexual advances. Sadly, the Senate’s Committee on Ethics and Privileges, led by Senator Neda Imasuen, dismissed her petition as “Dead on Arrival” and recommended her suspension.
Senator Natasha, however, refused to go down without a fight, and the court judgment was in her favour. But even then, the Senate have refused to lift her suspension. They claim the court ruling isn’t in her favour as she claims, and for her to be recalled, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan must fulfil two conditions. What are these conditions? Are they within the law?
